Can a car tracker be used to stop someone from driving your vehicle? This article shows you how.
Our car is not only an expensive asset that we own it also a bit of our own personal private space too.
If our vehicle is stolen we want to recover it as quickly as possible with minimal damage and theft of our personal items.
Whilst a good alarm, a factory-fitted or after market immobiliser and ensuring our car is secure can reduce the likelihood of theft what can we do when theft does occur?
Usually, we alert police as soon as we discover that our car has been stolen but then it is usually a stressful wait until the car is found often with some damage.
Locate and track your vehicle instantly with a GPS Car Tracker
Wouldn’t it be much better to be able to:
a) Know if and when your car has been moved (via SMS text alerts to your mobile phone). You car may be towed, stolen or someone you know may have used a spare key.
b) Direct police exactly to the GPS co-ordinates where your car is right now and be able to remotely disable the ignition, so once the vehicle has been parked, it can no longer be operated.
c) Immediately recover the vehicle after it has been abandoned, further reducing the possibility of more damage or loss.
There are several ways the tracker can notify you via SMS text that the car has been moved or is being tampered with. These include:
- Car alarm activation (if wired into the input of the tracker)
- Ignition on (the car was started)
- Geofence function which messages you if your car moves out of an area
Once you receive the alert message you can take the appropriate action to secure your car including disabling it.
A GPS car tracker like the fleetminder FM Lite model provides remote disabling functionality and can even lock doors and sound the alarm.
Remote disable with car tracking
Here are the steps to add a remote disable car tracker to your vehicle.
Step 1) Purchase a suitable wired GPS vehicle tracker from an Australian supplier.
Step 2) Ask a qualified car stereo installer or auto electrician to fit the GPS tracker.
The installer will connect the tracker to the car’s power supply and to the ignition so the tracker knows when the vehicle is running or turned off.
Then the installer will also connect the output of the tracker inline with the car’s starter motor circuit. This allows the tracker now to disable the car from being started (on request).
Another output from the tracker can be wired into the electric windows, central locking system or to the alarm system so when triggered remotely the windows can be automatically wind up, the doors lock and the siren goes off (for a set number of minutes). You choose which one or which of the remote control options you prefer.
The fleetminder FM Lite is an easy-to-fit tracking device with two wires for power, one for the ignition so key on/ key off events can be recorded on the Live Tracking software, an input to alert the owner if the car alarm goes off, and two outputs to remotely disable the car, locks doors, etc.
Remote disable use
Once the car tracker is wired up as above the car owner can send either a SMS text command to their vehicle tracker or by using a mobile phone app that comes with the tracker to disable the car – e.g. to disable the ignition or the starter motor.
(this is a screenshot of the fleetminder mobile phone app. The user can press one of the orange buttons and confirms the request to enable and disable the required feature on their car).
Route history – where the car travelled
A driving route history with every 3 minutes mapped out can be viewed on a suitable Live Tracking software system.
(The black line above shows the route the car travelled. The car owner can zoom into each location to see the exact address where the vehicle stopped.)
These easy-to-use software and mobile phone tools makes it quick and convenient to find your missing ts car and disable it from being driven again.
GPS trackers are an inexpensive must-have accessory for car owners wanting better protection for their automotive vehicle.
