fleetminder has introduced a new GPS vehicle tracker to its extensive range of vehicle and asset tracking systems.

The fleetminder FM NxtG-V is a compact and discrete vehicle tracker for 24/7 monitoring of cars, vans and trucks using the 3G/NextG network in Australia and with similar 3G networks in other countries.

The FM NxtG-V vehicle tracker also has added anti-theft and theft recovery features such the ability to remotely immobilise vehicle(s) or activate the vehicle alarm.

FM NxtG-V anti-theft vehicle tracker
(the fleetminder FM NxtG-V – affordable anti-theft device and vehicle tracker)

For location and travel history, the tracking unit can utilise all internet or mobile phone network connected devices including mobile phones, tablets and PCs.

The fleetminder FM NxtG-V vehicle tracker’s powerful features include:

3G/NextG network communications

The FM NxtG-V tracker communicates over the 3G/NextG network.

In Australia, Telstra have extensive 3G/NextG coverage over all capital cities and regional areas.  Other providers such as Vodafone or Optus can also be used.

Other countries also have good 3G coverage with their local mobile network providers.

GPS receiver for live location, speed and direction updates

The FM NxtG-V vehicle tracking unit has in-built GPS module so it knows where it (and your vehicle is) pretty much anywhere in the world.

By using GPS data, the NxtG-V also records the speed of the vehicle and which direction it is travelling in.  This information is transmitted to the fleetminder Live Tracking system along with the vehicle’s present location.

Car tracker route travelled on Google Map

Live mapping is provided by Google Maps and Bing Maps.

Anti-theft functions

Whether you (or one of your drivers) have left your vehicle in a yard, garage or out on the street, you will be able to monitor the location of your vehicle at all times.

Of course there are many reasons why your vehicle could be moved without your permission, such as:

  • Theft
  • Towed (by the local council, police, etc)
  • Someone you know with a set of keys has taken it. Perhaps one of your drivers is using the vehicle for personal activities without your approval.

Anti-theft alerts can be provided with a number of functions including geofencing boundaries and inputs (see below).

For more information on vehicle geofencing, click here.

GPS tracking live tracking service geofence circular

Digital and analogue inputs and outputs (advanced anti-theft)

The optional inputs and outputs can be used to provide advanced alerts, remote control and anti-theft and vehicle recovery functions.

For example, alerts will be sent to the owner when the car alarm goes off (an input to the NxtG-V) and when the vehicle owner wants to remotely disable the ignition (the output of the NxtG-V).

The use of a qualified car stereo installer or auto electrician is highly recommended to install the FM NxtG-V tracker, and for wiring up the optional input and outputs.

Programmable intelligent reporting system (3 minutes by default)

The reporting system in the fleetminder NxtG-V vehicle tracker itself is highly programmable for the customer’s needs by the fleetminder head office.

Programming is completed when the tracker is originally supplied, and later if required if needs change.

For example, the typical reporting time is once every three minutes when the vehicle is moving, and every 60 minutes when the vehicle is stationery.

For more critical vehicle monitoring needs, the NxtG-V can be programmed for one minute reporting and more frequent reports when the vehicle is parked.

Ignition off and on data is also captured, allowing fleet operators access to detailed reports on drive time and fleet efficiency.

Harsh driving/harsh acceleration/crash sensor (in-built)

The NextG-V tracker also has an in-built g-force sensor.  This sensor can monitor the driving behaviour of your vehicles.

Rough driving can obviously dramatically increase vehicle wear and maintenance and the cost of maintaining those vehicles.

For example, say you have five drivers and one driver seems to have higher g-force activity than the other drivers of the same vehicle, you can then review the driving behaviour of that one driver in more detail.

With a crash, obviously, your driver will report this in, but the g-force sensor and reporting data will show the vehicle’s speed and other important information at the time of the crash.

This data can also be reviewed if a driver backs into a wall or other vehicles.

Over-speed reporting

This also ties in with driver behaviour.  If any driver gets a speeding ticket, you can review their driving history on the day via the fleetminder Live Tracking system.

The same system can also be setup to email overspeed alerts to you, or to your fleet office so you’ll know how often a driver exceeds the maximum speed limit.

Overspeed report with fleetminder vehicle tracking system

SOS Panic button

A SOS panic button can be fitted to the NxtG-V tracker in case the driver is in trouble and their mobile phone is not working.

The SOS panic button alert can be sent to you or your fleet manager’s mobile phone as a text SMS.

This function is useful if your driver gets in trouble and their mobile phone has been lost or damaged in an accident.

Fleetminder FM NxtG-V GPS tracking SOS panic button and cable

Backup battery in case of power cuts on main supply

The internal battery of the fleetminder NxtG-V can last up to 6 to 12 hours after the main power has been removed or cut by a thief.  This also includes a draining or flat main vehicle battery.

Low battery reports can also be programmed to be sent allowing you to find out why the vehicle’s battery is being drained or why it has been disconnected.

External GPS antenna

The FM NxtG-V has an external GPS antenna allowing for the tracker to be installed discreetly and hidden away.  The GPS antenna can also be mounted discreetly near the top of the vehicle dash or other location.

Car and van GPS antenna with long wire

Simple 3-wire installation

Only three wires; power, ground and ignition need to be connected if wiring the NxtG-V as a simple vehicle tracker.  Additional wiring is required for the advanced anti-theft functions by use of the inputs and outputs.

The use of a qualified car stereo installer or auto electrician is highly recommended to install the FM NxtG-V tracker.

12V/24V compatible

The fleetminder FM NxtG-V can work on 12V vehicles as well as trucks and other vehicles with a 24 volt system.

Compact size – easy to hide

The NxtG-V vehicle tracker is a compact size only measuring 47mm/80mm/26mm (width/length/height).

Free fleetminder Apple and Android app

The NxtG-V will work with fleetminder’s easy-to-use, but powerful mobile phone app.

Both Apple and Android apps versions are available from the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores.

Simply search for “fleetminder fleet management” on the app stores.

The use of GPS tracking in Perth notches-up another save!

Western Australian Police reported on their Facebook page that a thief had stolen a $70,000 loader.

The good news was that the Perth owner had a GPS tracking device fitted.  Once the owner knew the loader was missing he was able to use the GPS tracker to give the loader’s location to police.

At the time of the police arrival, the thief had bogged the loader and was using a shovel to try to dig it out.

Use of GPS tracking in Perth

Beside the ‘smart’ loader owner, many other vehicle and machinery owners in Perth have been fitting GPS tracking devices.

What are they?  And how do they work?

GPS tracking devices are small electronic gadgets around the size of a cigarette box.  They pickup the exact location on earth using GPS and then transmit that location to the internet (securely) or via the mobile phone network to the owner’s mobile phone.

FM Lite 3G GPS vehicle tracker

(A typical GPS vehicle or machinery tracking device.  This one measures 83mm x 74mm)

Automatic theft notification

If you also own an expensive piece of machinery or vehicle – asset, how do you know if it’s missing?

Besides visibly seeing that it’s no longer parked where it should be, you can use one of these alert functions with a GPS tracking device:

  1. Automatic SMS text alert sent to your mobile phone, and a secondary mobile phone whenever the vehicle’s/machinery ignition is switched on,  OR
  2. Automatic SMS text alert IF you have an alarm fitted and the alarm goes off, OR
  3. Setup a geofence fence which is a virtual perimeter around your parked vehicle or machinery.  You would then receive an automatic SMS text alert if your asset leaves that set parked perimeter.

Getting the current location of your asset

The use of GPS tracking in Perth has become much more popular due the affordability of the latest GPS tracking devices.  Cars, vans, buses, trucks or any machinery or expensive asset can be tracked easily and simply.

The current location of your asset can be obtained from your mobile phone, tablet, laptop or PC computer anytime anywhere.

The exact location will appear on an online map (Google or Bing maps) allowing you to alert WA police if your vehicle or machinery has been stolen.

This is how the Perth loader owner was able to quickly recover his machinery – and ‘notching up’ another save by GPS tracking technology.

As a business owner or fleet manager how can you actually monitor driver behaviour in the field?

Usually the only time you would know if a particular driver is not performing or is not driving safely is when a speeding or other fine is issued, or you get complaints from customers.

Other signs are lost or damaged goods or when there is damage to your company cars, vans or trucks.

Rather than wait for costly incidents and accidents to occur it’s much better to monitor and review driver behaviour whenever you need to.

Fleet driver behaviour GPS tracking reports

That way you can discuss driving style issues BEFORE they become an expensive problem for you.

Monitoring driving styles is a challenge but the good news is that GPS tracking technology can automate driving behaviour monitoring and reporting.

GPS tracking technology – a fleet manager’s time saver

GPS tracking devices installed in your fleet vehicles can send important location and driving data automatically every 1 to 3 minutes.

You or your fleet manager can then easily monitor driving behaviour in real-time or run a monthly report on driving behaviour for each driver.

Driver behaviour statistics you can monitor

Some of the driver statistics you can monitor and other useful information include:

  • Which driver – Either you have one designated driver per vehicle, or you use RFID technology with the GPS tracking hardware tracking device to identify each driver.
  • Start and stops times – When the driver actually began their day, and how long they were on the road and how long they were at each stop
  • Stopping locations – Where the driver stopped.  So if they are ‘moonlighting’  and making private stops you’ll know
  • Excessive idling –  Leaving the engine running at stops
  • Efficiency – Compare each driver’s day for amount of time on the road and stopping times.  Obviously the benchmark depends on whether you have delivery, pickup or service people on the road.
  • Speeding – Over a set speed
  • Fuel consumption – Is a particular fleet vehicle consuming a lot more fuel that other fleet vehicle when driving similar total kilometers in a week or a month.  Is fuel being ‘stolen’?
  • Harsh braking – When their vehicle braked suddenly over a certain G-force threshold
  • Harsh acceleration – When their vehicle accelerated quickly over a certain G-force threshold

Fleetminder Live Tracking System

The fleetminder tracking solutions incorporating the Live Tracking system allows you to run reports on various driver behaviour statistics.

Live GPS tracking device and mobile

These include:

Efficiency

This report can be run to show how many kilometres the vehicle has travelled on one day or over a date range:

Vehicle milage report gps tracking

Idle time report

This report that can be run to show when the vehicle was idling for long durations.  The minimum idling threshold can be set to say 10 minutes, or any other threshold time.

Speeding report

Here’s a report that can be run to show when the driver was speeding.  Usually set to 110km as the upper limit for SMS text warning alerts.

Overspeed report with fleetminder vehicle tracking system

Other tracking reports

Besides the above driving behaviour reports you can obtain many other reports from the fleetminder Live Tracking system:

fleetminder reports GPS tracking list

Summary

Of course, whilst monitoring driver behaviour is not something you or your fleet manager needs to review on a daily basis, you can certainly inspect any ‘problem’ drivers whenever you need to.

Also monthly reports on each vehicle and driver are available using this technology to check fleet efficiency.

Using smart technology like GPS fleet vehicle tracking with driving monitoring will decrease your fleet costs and improve safety for your fleet and the public.

(route of a fleet vehicle during the day displayed on the fleetminder Live Tracking Google Map with blue highway and road markers)

The results and mapping benefits for businesses

Google Maps APIs helped fleetminder customers handle its fleets more efficiently and reduce costs.  Since drivers spend less time on the road, employee overtime has been reduced by 25 percent.

Customers now track details about driving habits, which led to a 50 percent decrease in inefficient driving.

Through the use of the Geocoding API and access to Street View imagery, companies have been able to reduce the number of deliveries to incorrect addresses by 20 percent.

By being able to clearly see the location of all vehicles that might require immediate maintenance, and receiving real-time updates about accidents, dispatchers can quickly send help during emergencies. Due to constant vehicle tracking, customers recover stolen vehicles twice as quickly. Quicker recoveries mean less damage done.

With the new system, fleetminder customers have reduced their vehicle insurance by an average of 10 percent by creating reports for insurance companies detailing driver behaviour, vehicle maintenance and fatigue management.

fleetminder sees benefits as well, notably in attracting new clients and keeping existing ones.

The familiar Google Maps interface makes the fleetminder system easy to use, reducing the need for customers to train their employees.

Will your vehicle tracker STOP working?  Telstra 2G network to shutdown in 4 weeks!

Australia, 1st November 2016:

The Telstra 2G network will no longer support your older vehicle tracker.

It’s been about 18 months since Telstra announced the shutdown of their old 2G / GSM mobile phone network for the 1st December 2016.

The 2G network was introduced into Australia in the 1990s and was a very popular network which saw millions of Australians purchase mobile phones and other devices such as vehicle trackers.

Why then shutdown a popular network?

Answer: Cost versus return (for the telcos)

It’s just that Telstra does not want to continue to spend money supporting and servicing their old 2G tower and communication equipment.

This is what Telstra have to say…

“Today 2G mobile traffic accounts for less than 1 per cent of our total mobile network traffic. And, the national coverage available to 3G and 4G customers on our network is around four times greater than that available to 2G services.”

Telstra 2G network shutdown in December 2016

Whilst there are other network providers in Australia most vehicle trackers operate on the Telstra network.

This means if you own an older 2G GPS vehicle tracker you may not be able to track and find your vehicle(s) from the 1st of December 2016 with the shutdown of the Telstra 2G network.

Basically the tracker keep trying to transmit location data but nothing will be receiving it.  If you send a command to the tracker it won’t be received by the tracker either.  The whole network in between won’t exist.

It’s like having one of those tin can telephones – you’ll still have the tins, but the string is gone.

How can you tell if your vehicle tracker is a 2G model?

Either check your invoice from your supplier – it may say 3G tracker which means you are safe. Apart from that you won’t know if you have an older 2G or a current 3G model.

As a fleet operator it’s important to continually looks for ways to be more competitive by improving fleet productivity whilst maintaining or improving safety as well.

Productivity boosts can be achieved by decreasing driver’s paperwork and maximising their time on the road – and the use of your fleet vehicles.

When it comes to maximising time on the road communication time can be an efficiency killer.  With customer needs requiring on-time delivery and flexibility in scheduling it’s very common for fleet and operations manager to be sending updates to their drivers.

Mobile phones voice or SMS text are frequently used to contact the driver but they are a big distraction (and a safety issue) whilst drivers are on the road.

fleet productivity communication not using mobile

(The dangerous and illegal method to send instructions to a fleet driver)

Of course, calling a driver on their phone is fine if the drivers are setup with hands-free or bluetooth.

However, if the fleet operator is giving out an address the driver will need to pull over to write it down.  And then if it’s not a depot or usual customer address the driver will need to punch the address into their GPS navigation system.  This all takes time and eats into fleet productivity.

Other alternatives sending SMS text messages – again use of the mobile phone in the driver’s hands is illegal and dangerous when they are driving.

A much better (and safer way) is to send instructions direct to the driver’s navigation device. That way the delivery or pickup address can actually appear in the GPS navigation screen, saving the driver from having to pull over the side of the road and programming it in manually.

Fleet productivity is improved as drivers spend less time on route planning and are operating their vehicles safer.

fleetminder offers this very solution through it’s Garmin navigation screen addon for the Platinum NxtG+ devices.

(The driver can view their updated stops route and head office messages with the press of a button)

Easy messaging with Garmin and fleetminder

The fleet manager can send various types of messages to the driver’s Garmin screen including:

  • Delivery and pickup address information (stops)
  • Changes to pickups and deliveries
  • Road hazards and weather reports
  • Special instructions
  • Any other information

To send a message, the fleet operator chooses the vehicle from their PC screen and either selects a pre-defined message or writes a custom message. The text message then appears as alert as well as being listed in the Messages box in the menu on the driver’s Garmin screen.

Garmin screen driver messages

The driver can also respond using pre-defined messages like “Okay”, or “Acknowledged” or by writing a custom message.

The list of pre-defined messages for both the fleet operator and driver can be set and added to anytime.

To have an address appear on the driver’s Garmin navigation screen, the fleet operator simply sends a location message (a stop), saving the driver’s time and reducing the chance of data entry error.

GPS tracking with Garmin stops

Improve fleet productivity and safety

Reducing the need to directly contact to the driver means fewer distractions (safety) and eliminating them from having to stop the vehicle to lookup new address information, or to having to respond to SMS texts on their mobile phone.

This can save at least 20 minutes a day per driver, and over a week up to 2 hours.

And when you have a fleet of vehicles this can translate to a significant wage saving and a boost to productivity.

Suitable GPS tracker models

The Garmin screen add-on is available to any new or previously installed fleetminder Platinum NxtG+ GPS tracker or with the Platinum Plus GPS tracker.

Not only does the system provide the messaging functionality the GPS tracking device is fully functional with all the vehicle tracking features important to fleet management operations including:

  • GPS location of all fleet vehicles
  • Geofencing and site reports and alerts
  • Driver behaviour monitoring
  • Route optimisation
  • And so on…

Can a car tracker be used to stop someone from driving your vehicle?  This article shows you how.

Our car is not only an expensive asset that we own it also a bit of our own personal private space too.

If our vehicle is stolen we want to recover it as quickly as possible with minimal damage and theft of our personal items.

Whilst a good alarm, a factory-fitted or after market immobiliser and ensuring our car is secure can reduce the likelihood of theft what can we do when theft does occur?

Usually, we alert police as soon as we discover that our car has been stolen but then it is usually a stressful wait until the car is found often with some damage.

Locate and track your vehicle instantly with a GPS Car Tracker

Wouldn’t it be much better to be able to:

a) Know if and when your car has been moved (via SMS text alerts to your mobile phone).  You car may be towed, stolen or someone you know may have used a spare key.

b) Direct police exactly to the GPS co-ordinates where your car is right now and be able to remotely disable the ignition, so once the vehicle has been parked, it can no longer be operated.

c) Immediately recover the vehicle after it has been abandoned, further reducing the possibility of more damage or loss.

(The car’s current location will appear on a Google map or Bing map)

Movement alert

There are several ways the tracker can notify you via SMS text that the car has been moved or is being tampered with.  These include:

  • Car alarm activation (if wired into the input of the tracker)
  • Ignition on (the car was started)
  • Geofence function which messages you if your car moves out of an area

Once you receive the alert message you can take the appropriate action to secure your car including disabling it.

A GPS car tracker like the fleetminder FM Lite model provides remote disabling functionality and can even lock doors and sound the alarm.

Remote disable with car tracking

Here are the steps to add a remote disable car tracker to your vehicle.

Step 1) Purchase a suitable wired GPS vehicle tracker from an Australian supplier.

Step 2) Ask a qualified car stereo installer or auto electrician to fit the GPS tracker.

The installer will connect the tracker to the car’s power supply and to the ignition so the tracker knows when the vehicle is running or turned off.

Then the installer will also connect the output of the tracker inline with the car’s starter motor circuit.  This allows the tracker now to disable the car from being started (on request).

Another output from the tracker can be wired into the electric windows, central locking system or to the alarm system so when triggered remotely the windows can be automatically wind up, the doors lock and the siren goes off (for a set number of minutes).  You choose which one or which of the remote control options you prefer.

The fleetminder FM Lite  is an easy-to-fit tracking device with two wires for power, one for the ignition so key on/ key off events can be recorded on the Live Tracking software, an input to alert the owner if the car alarm goes off, and two outputs to remotely disable the car, locks doors, etc.

Remote disable use

Once the car tracker is wired up as above the car owner can send either a SMS text command to their vehicle tracker or by using a mobile phone app that comes with the tracker to disable the car – e.g. to disable the ignition or the starter motor.

(this is a screenshot of the fleetminder mobile phone app.  The user can press one of the orange buttons and confirms the request to enable and disable the required feature on their car).

Route history – where the car travelled

A driving route history with every 3 minutes mapped out can be viewed on a suitable Live Tracking software system.

Car tracker route travelled on Google Map

(The black line above shows the route the car travelled. The car owner can zoom into each location to see the exact address where the vehicle stopped.)

These easy-to-use software and mobile phone tools makes it quick and convenient to find your missing ts car and disable it from being driven again.

GPS trackers are an inexpensive must-have accessory for car owners wanting better protection for their automotive vehicle.

Valuable cars are an achievement plateau that many of us aspire to reach but there are those who are always looking for the opportunity to abuse our trust and commandeer a valuable vehicle for a joy ride when the opportunity presents itself.

A GPS tracker monitors your valet

(Hmmm, the valet looks trusting but you never know…)

When you turn over a valuable asset like an expensive sports car to a valet, don’t assume that they can resist the temptation to take it for a joy ride. Protect your car with a GPS tracker.

GPS vehicle trackers are simple and easy to use and can be installed on any vehicle.

Vehicle trackers most commonly contain a mobile phone SIM card allowing them to communicate their location frequently and cheaply.  More advanced trackers can transmit back to another satellite network allowing the vehicle (or asset) to be tracked anywhere!  Even in remote areas.

(A typical mobile phone network enabled GPS vehicle tracker)

Protect your valuable car from unauthorised use

GPS trackers allows you monitor the location of your car and receive and instant alert if it leaves a previously established perimeter (geofence).

A geofence is a virtual boundary set by GPS co-ordinates. Sounds technical but they are quite simple to set and use.

Software functions on Live Tracking services or a complimentary mobile phone app can set these geofences with a push of a button or a few clicks on a mouse.

Below is a picture of a map with a geofence boundary (perimeter).

GPS tracking live tracking service geofence circular

If the vehicle does leave this geofence perimeter you can choose to activate the alarm and ignition kill feature to stop the unauthorised use.

Geofence violations can either be sent as a text message to your mobile phone or via email.

Obviously receiving a text message is very useful as you can make a quick decision whether to disable your car from further movement (once the ignition has been switched off).

GPS tracker assists to recover assets

If your vehicle has been moved without your authorisation then you will be able to locate and recover it quickly before additional damage, further theft or having your car stripped down for parts.

The GPS tracker will provide the coordinates for where the vehicle is located allow authorities to step in and recover the vehicle.

GPS vehicle tracking location on map

(the tracker will report the vehicle’s location on a Google or Bing map)

Taking an expensive sports car out should not mean you cannot park it safely and securely.

Install a GPS tracker and you will have the peace-of-mind wherever you may leave your valuable vehicle.
